We highlight how international relations are shaping the development of wind and solar energy, the EU’s climate targets, and the strategic choices required for a sustainable energy supply.

Learn about social misperceptions regarding electricity production and energy policy – including the municipal wind power veto – both on the national Swedish level and in a dozen municipalities where Peerpointing and its project partners from across the renewable industry commissioned best-practice polls before the summer. As State Secretary to Minister for Energy, Business and Industry Ebba Busch, Maja Lundbäck provides an insider perspective on Sweden’s energy policy. In this keynote address, she outlines the government’s priorities for the final year of the parliamentary term and discusses the opportunities and challenges in achieving a fossil-free, competitive, and secure energy future.

The permitting process for wind power, solar parks and energy storage is facing major changes. Proposals from the Environmental Permitting Inquiry, the EU Renewable Energy Directive and other initiatives will affect regulations and the industry’s ability to plan and implement projects. This session discusses how the changes may affect the practical implementation of projects and what consequences this will have for the industry, with a focus on implementation, time frames and preparations for a new permitting process.

Where wind power, solar parks and energy storage systems are built is crucial to achieving climate goals and creating a sustainable energy supply. This session focuses on the role of energy planning at national, regional, and municipal level, and how authorities, developers and other actors can work together to enable the expansion of wind, solar and storage. We discuss how technological expansion can be balanced with land use, environmental considerations and social acceptance.

How can municipalities and regions plan for the expansion of wind, solar and storage? How can authorities and other actors support effective and sustainable planning processes?

The expansion of renewable energy on forest land affects land use and can compete with other societal interests. This session highlights the key challenges and opportunities when energy, forestry and other land interests are to coexist. We discuss the trade-offs between different interests and how planning, strategy and local support can contribute to sustainable development and local support.

What methods and strategies can facilitate the expansion of large-scale renewable energy in forest and rural areas without compromising other important societal interests?

Swedish electricity grids are under increasing pressure as both demand and renewable production grow rapidly. Power shortages and bottlenecks risk slowing down both industrial expansion and electrification in general. This session explores the solutions needed to free up power – from smarter use and increased flexibility to technical innovations and investments in grid capacity.

What reforms and decisions are needed to ensure that the electricity grids can meet future needs, and how can stakeholders work together to strengthen the stability and robustness of the system?

The government’s incentive proposals for renewable energy could have a major impact on local acceptance and permit processes. But to what extent do municipal decisions reflect actual public opinion? This session highlights how clear incentives and models for economic participation can strengthen trust, create jobs and provide economic benefits for local communities. We will also discuss how developers can contribute through early and transparent dialogue, and what lessons from the expansion of wind power can facilitate the development of solar power.
